Chevron honored with Sustainable Business Award Indonesia 2017

Jakarta, Indonesia, December 7, 2017 - Chevron Indonesia won the Sustainable Business Award Indonesia (SBA-I) 2017 in the Best Water Management category. Deputy Managing Director, Chevron IndoAsia Business Unit (IBU), Albert Simanjuntak, received the prestigious recognition from Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Minister of National Development Planning, at the award ceremony at Grand Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta yesterday. This award demonstrates Chevron’s commitment to sustainable operations that enable human progress.

The Best Water Management category was awarded to Chevron Indonesia as recognition for Chevron’s efforts in environmental stewardship. The SBA-I judging panel determined that Chevron Indonesia has been successfully applying the natural resources Environmental Performance Standard (EPS) in all of its onshore upstream businesses and capital projects. The standard mandates water resource screenings to identify potentially significant environmental and social impacts associated with water use. The standard also assesses existing and future environmental and social conditions.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious recognition alongside other respectable national and multinational companies. We are proud of our partnership of over nine decades with the Government and people of Indonesia. It is our commitment to continue supporting the Government of Indonesia’s energy goals and delivering the energy that the country needs safely, efficiently and reliably,” said Simanjuntak.

In Indonesia and around the globe, Chevron operates in accordance with applicable environmental laws and regulations, and recognized global industry standards. The Company applies best practices in environmental management and continues to seek new ways to minimize its footprint and improve environmental and social performance.

“We have invested in a number of environmental programs approved by the government and have been recognized as a leading industry which reduced air emissions, produced water and solid waste associated with our operations. We continuously work hard to maintain our reputation for world-class performance through the disciplined application of the Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS). Our actions are guided by the following two tenets: &ldqou;Do it safely or not at all” and “There is always time to do it right”, explained Chuck Taylor, managing director IBU.

Chevron Indonesia has successfully reduced air emissions from its operations by 70 per cent over the last ten years and has started a project to eliminate produced water discharge from its operations. In the Minas field, we practice zero water discharge, or Zewadi, where there is no produced water discharge into the environment, it is re-injected back into the earth to produce more oil. By implementing Zewadi, we successfully meet and even go beyond the Government of Indonesia’s regulation and conserve the environment.

Competing for the awards with respected national and multinational companies operating in Indonesia, Chevron passed the pre-qualification process with satisfactory rating. The Sustainable Business Award (SBA) uses a comprehensive framework which assesses business action across twelve categories, including strategy and sustainability management; community; climate change; energy management; water management; waste and material productivity; land use, biodiversity and environment; workforce; supply chain management; business responsibility and ethics; stakeholder engagement; and UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Indonesia is one of six countries where the Sustainable Business Award (SBA) is held. The assessment framework was developed in collaboration with stakeholders as well as leading global experts and is fully consistent with international best practice. The award process involves assessment by Global Initiatives, PWC Consulting, and the National Advisory Panel. The full list of this year’s National Advisory Panel members can be found at http://sustainablebusinessawards.com/countries/sba-indonesia/.

“The awards validate and celebrate the companies which are leading the way in sustainable business and which have truly instilled this objective into their long-term business strategy. The awards also aim to inspire all businesses, large and small, to make sustainability the foundation of their corporate mission and brand” said Tony Gourlay, CEO of Global Initiatives.
